Dr. Lee J. Lefkowitz (Bucknell ’93) received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California at San Diego after graduating from Bucknell. Following his research in biochemistry at UC San Diego, he entered the U.S. Army. He currently holds the rank of captain and is stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland where he heads the Department of Defense (DOD) Cholinesterase Reference Laboratory (CRL). The CRL is responsible for managing the quality assurance component of the DOD-mandated medical surveillance program that monitors red blood cell cholinesterase levels for personnel at chemical weapons storage depots, chemical weapons demilitarization facilities and a number of smaller organizations that also work with nerve agents. His laboratory performs a specialized clinical test that is the most sensitive method available to detect nerve agent exposure. As part of his work, Lee is involved with new methods to destroy chemical weapons as required by the Chemical Weapons Convention.
