March 2006 Meeting

The three hundred and sixty second meeting of the Susquehanna Valley Section will be held on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at Wilkes University. The meeting will begin at 8:00 p.m. in Room 270 of the Stark Learning Center. The speaker will be Dr. Gregory Peters, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Wilkes University who will present a talk entitled "A Random Walk through the Periodic Table."

The meeting will be preceded by dinner at 6:30 p.m. in Room 214 of the Marts Center on the Wilkes University campus.

Dinner:

The dinner will be buffet style with the following items: Chicken Marsala, Portabella Shitake Stroganoff (a vegetarian dish), green beans with red peppers, roasted red potatoes, a green salad, coffee tea, iced tea, and a fall desert served with coffee. The cost is $15.00. Please RSVP to Mary Lou Gillespie (570-408-4750) or mgilles@wilkes.edu no later than noon on Monday, March 13, 2006.

Dr. Gregory Peters received his B.S. in Chemistry at Truman State University, Kirsville, MO.; Ph.D. at the University of Wyoming, Laramie and was a postdoctoral fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He was also an assistant professor at the University of Memphis. He joined the chemistry department at Wilkes in 2005. His research interests include coordination chemistry, reactivity of novel phosphines and ruthenium-mediated organic transformations.

Directions:

Take I-81 North to Route 309 North (Exit 170B, Old Exit 47B). Follow Route 309 North to Exit 3 (Plains/River Street) and make a left onto River Street at the traffic light at the bottom of the exit ramp. Follow River Street south to Wilkes University (located on the left side of River St). Parking is available behind the Henry Student Union Building (the SUB). There is an entrance to this lot immediately past the SUB on South St. (which is one long block past Northampton St.) You may also park in any of the other campus lots.

Marts Center is the 274 South Franklin Street, mid-block south from South Streets.

Stark Learning Center is on River St. mid-block between Northampton and South Streets.

2006 MARM Reminder

Mark your calendars! The Susquehanna Valley and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Sections are organizing the American Chemical Society Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting (MARM 2006) which will be held June 4 to June 7, 2006 at the HERSHEY Lodge in Hershey, PA. For more information visit us at www.marmacs.org/2006.

Catalytic Motors and Pumps

MARM 2006 features an in depth technical program in materials science and nanotechnology, headlined by Dr. Thomas Mallouk, director of Penn State University's Center for Nanoscale Science and the DuPont Professor of Materials Chemistry and Physics. Dr. Mallouk will be presenting an exciting plenary lecture on nanoscale motors and pumps. He is well known for his design and application of nanomaterials to several areas of science and society. Dr. Mallouk has applied his creativity to thinking small, using DNA to aid in the assembly of inorganic sheets, rods, and tubes, using combinatorial techniques to discover new fuel cell catalysts, using nanocrystalline semiconductors for artificial photosynthesis, and using chemical "delivery vehicles" for transport of nanoparticles in the remediation of polluted soils. MARM 2006 is honored to have Dr. Mallouk present the Tuesday evening plenary lecture on his collaborative work with Dr. Ayusman Sen and their students on catalytic nanomotors. This lecture will feature amazing videos of nanometer size rods and gears that use hydrogen peroxide to fuel their motion. Anyone interested in how nanoscale chemistry might ultimately change our lives will be happy they attended this thought-stimulating presentation.

A Retrospective View of Drug Discovery

The 2006 ACS Middle Atlantic Regional Meeting (MARM) is honored to have Dr. Paul Anderson, the 2006 Priestly Medalist and 1997 president of the ACS, presenting a plenary lecture. Dr. Anderson is a distinguished chemist, with nearly 40 years in the pharmaceutical industry, contributing to the discovery of numerous pharmaceutically important compounds, including the HIV drugs Crixivan and Sustiva, the cholesterol lowering drug Zocor, and glaucoma treatment Trusopt. Along with being a leader at Merck, Dupont Pharmaceuticals, and Bristol-Myers Squibb, he has also played a role on scientific advisory boards at smaller pharmaceutical companies, such as Acadia and Achillion. His achievements and service to chemistry have been additionally recognized with many honors and awards; the 2003 National Academy of Sciences Award for Chemistry in Service to Society, the 2002 Perkin Medal, and the 1995 E.B. Hershberg Award to name a few.
