March 2008 Meeting

The three hundred and seventy-fifth meeting of the Section will be held on Wednesday, 12 March 2008 at Misericordia University in Dallas, PA. The meeting, which begins at 8:00 p.m., will be preceded by a dinner. The guest speaker, William H. Simpson (retired from Eastman Kodak Research Laboratories), will deliver a presentation entitled "Matte Finish for Thermal Prints: An Industrial Chemical Development Project".

Directions: see below.

Dinner: will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Pickett's Charge Restaurant. Ordering will be from the menu.

Meeting: at 8:00 p.m. in Room 206 of the Hafey/McCormick Science Building at the University. There will be brief section announcements followed by the presentation.

Matte Finish for Thermal Prints: An Industrial Chemical Development Project
The presentation begins with an introduction to the organizational culture and working environment of a large industrial research laboratory. A description of the dye diffusion printing process is given so that the listener can better understand the challenges facing a team of scientists and engineers charged with the task of developing a matte finish for dye-diffusion digital prints. An attempt is made throughout to inform those who expect to become scientists of the scope of projects in industry and of the teamwork necessary to bring those projects to a successful completion.

William H. Simpson attended the College of William & Mary in Virginia where he received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania and received a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry. Bill then did a postdoctoral appointment for two years at the Franklin Institute Research Laboratories (FIRL) in the field of Organic Solid State Photoconductors.

Bill≠s professional experience includes government contract research at FIRL on development of solar cells, adsorption of toxic vapors onto carbon black and dark conduction mechanisms in thin films of chlorophyll. He joined Polaroid Corporation in 1971 to begin a career in imaging science that lasted until he retired. Bill worked in instant photography, microencapsulated imaging systems at Mead Imaging and thermal printing systems at Kodak Research Laboratories. He has published nine articles in peer reviewed journals and holds thirty-seven patents in imaging technology.

He is presently retired from Kodak Research Laboratories and resides in Lewisburg, PA.
