Applying a Foundation in Chemistry to a Career in Industrial Adhesives
There are endless opportunities and possible careers that build from a foundation of chemistry. Everything we touch and how it works can be explained through chemistry. It is the core science that helps us understand and develop new molecules. Choosing it as a career path opens the door to many opportunities across a broad range of industries including areas like pharmaceuticals, food science, plastics and polymer development, textiles, and forensics. One path is to apply a background in chemistry and material science to the world of adhesives. The use and chemistry of adhesives is diverse with high performance adhesives used in aerospace applications to front seal adhesives used on envelope closers. We are familiar with Elmer's glue used in crafts and the super glue use to repair household items but beyond that many people give little thought to where and how they are used. They are, in fact, a very integral and relevant part of the many things we come into contact with in our daily lives and can perform a key function in the products we use. This talk will explore the diversity of those applications and how a foundation in chemistry can be applied to a career in adhesives.
Ingrid Cole graduated from the University of Florida with a BS in Chemistry and a MS in Materials Science and Engineering. She started her career in 1992 at National Starch and Chemical as a product development chemist developing adhesives for packaging and converting applications. She has held a number of product development management roles supporting packaging, converting, tapes, labels, hygienics and construction markets. She holds several patents in the area of low application temperature adhesives. She is currently VP of Technical Solutions at Henkel in their Industrial Adhesives Business. This group's primary objective is to deliver value through products, service and process improvements at our customers as well as deliver efficiency and quality improvement in their manufacturing plants.
JOSEPH PRIESTLEY SERVICE AWARD: The Section established the Joseph Priestley Service Award to recognize outstanding community involvement and outreach activities within our section membership. Dr. Donald E. Mencer will be receiving the Joseph Priestley Service Award.
