2018 - 2019 Schedule

SVS meetings are typically held in the evening on the second Wednesday of the month at rotating locations around the section. Any meeting that is moved from this standard date is indicated in red. Information is added and edited monthly, so check the site often!

  1. 19 September 2018 - [7:30 PM at Bucknell University] : The meeting will feature a presentation by our invited speaker and will be preceded by a social hour and dinner at 5:00. The guest speaker is Douglas Genna, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Youngstown State University, who will present a talk titled "A mechanistic approach to metal-organic framework synthesis and applications."   2. 17 October 2018-[7:00PM at Wilkes University]: This year's Catherine Bone Lecture will feature Priestley Medal recipient Geraldine Richmond, Ph. D. Presidential Chair in Science and Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oregon as the invited speaker who will present a talk titled "Mulling Over Emulsions: Molecular Assembly at Complex Liquid Surfaces." The lecture will be preceded by a dinner at 5:30. Get details.

  3. 25 October 2018 THURSDAY- [7:00PM at Lycoming College] : The third meeting of the SVS will coincide with Lycomimg College's Douthat Lecture Series and will feature Nobel Laureate Roald Hoffmann, Ph.D., Frank H.T. Rhodes Professor of Humane Letters Emeritus at Cornell University's Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. The title of the evening's talk will be "Chemistry’s Essential Tensions: Three Views of a Science in Culture." The lecture will be preceded by a dinner at 5:15. Get details.

  4. 13 February 2019 - [7:00PM at King's College] : The meeting will feature a presentation by our invited speaker and will be preceded by a dinner. The guest speaker will be Sherri Young, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Muhlenberg College and the title of the evening's talk will be "Anti-Inflammatory Drug Derivatives for Potential CNS Delivery."   5. 20 March 2019 - [7:00PM at Susquehanna University] : The meeting will be on the THIRD Wednesday of March and feature a presentation by our invited speaker and will be preceded by a dinner. The guest speaker will be Nicholas Piro, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Albright College. and the title of the evening's talk will be "Guanidine Coordination Complexes as Catalysts and Reagents for Group Transfer Reactions ."   6. 10 April 2019 - [7:00PM at Marywood University] : The meeting will feature a presentation by our invited speaker and will be preceded by dinner. The guest speaker will be Sireesha Mamilapalli, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at Marywood University and the title of the evening's talk will be "Fighting Anthrax: A new approach towards an old disease."   7. 1 May 2019 - [Annual Awards Banquet at the Pine Barn Inn in Danville]: With the presentation of various local section awards, the Annual Awards Banquet recognizes both aspiring and accomplished chemistry professionals in the area who have helped to promote chemistry, the chemical professions, and the section. The ceremony will begin at 5:30 PM and the guest speaker will be Dr. Jeremy Ramsey of the Department of Chemistry at Lycoming College who will present a talk titled "Using Analytical Chemistry to Support Rural Coffee Farmers in Dominican Republic."
