2016 - 2017 Schedule

SVS meetings are typically held in the evening on the second Wednesday of the month at rotating locations around the section. Information is added and edited monthly, so check the site often!

  1. 14 September 2016 - [7:30PM at Bucknell University]: The meeting will feature a presentation by our invited speaker and will be preceded by a social hour at 5:00 and dinner at 6:00. The guest speaker is Lou Ann Tom, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Chemistry at Susquehanna University of Maryland, who will present a talk titled "Photocatalytic Degradation of Common Pharmaceuticals and Analysis of Susquehanna River Water."   2. Thursday, 6 October 2016- [7:00 PM Wilkes University] : The meeting will feature a presentation by the invited speaker. The guest speaker will be Jonathan Rudick, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stony Brook University, and the title of the evening's talk will be "Programming Hierarchical Structures through Precision Macromolecular Synthesis."   3. 9 November 2016- [7:30 PM at Lycoming College] : The meeting will feature a presentation by our invited speaker and will be preceded by a dinner at 5:00. The guest speaker will be Chris Tipple, Ph.D., of the FBI Laboratory's Counterterrorism and Forensic Science Research Unit and the title of the evening's talk will be "Things That Go Boom."   4. 15 February 2017 - [University of Scranton] Moved from Feb. 8 : The meeting will feature a presentation by our invited speaker and will be preceded by a dinner. The guest speaker will be Sandhya Kortagere, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Drexel University and the title of the evening's talk will be "Dopamine D3 receptor agonists to treat Parkinson's Disease: A Gamble or Opportunity."   5. 08 March 2017 - [Susquehanna University]: The meeting will feature a presentation by our invited speaker and will be preceded by a dinner. The guest speaker will be William Kerber, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Bucknell University and the title of the evening's talk will be "How do proteins choose their metals? A model for Fe/Mn discrimination in the ferritin-like superfamily." Get details.

  6. 19 April 2017, moved from April 12 - [7:00 PM at Marywood University] : The meeting will feature a presentation by our invited speaker and will be preceded by dinner. The guest speaker will be Dr. Michael Fennie, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Scranton, and the title of the evening's talk will be "Propargyl Imidate Hydroamination and Nitrile-Tagged Tryptophan Derivatives: New Synthetic Methods and Molecular Probes."   7. 03 May 2017 - [Annual Awards Banquet at the Pine Barn Inn in Danville] at the Pine Barn Inn in Danville]: With the presentation of various local section awards, the Annual Awards Banquet recognizes both aspiring and accomplished chemistry professionals in the area who have helped to promote chemistry, the chemical professions, and the section. The ceremony will begin at 5:30 PM and the guest speaker will be Dr. Dee Casteel of the Department of Chemistry at Bucknell University who will present a talk titled "Joseph Priestley, Chemistry and Controversy."
