2017 - 2018 Schedule

SVS meetings are typically held in the evening on the second Wednesday of the month at rotating locations around the section. Information is added and edited monthly, so check the site often!

  1. 13 September 2017 - [Bucknell University] : The meeting will feature a presentation by our invited speaker and will be preceded by a social hour and dinner at 5:00. The guest speaker is E. James Petersson, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry, University of Pennsylvania, who will present a talk titled "Synthetic Protein Chemistry for the Study of Neurodegenerative Disease."   2. 4 October 2017- [Wilkes University] : The meeting will feature a presentation by the invited speaker and will be preceded by a social hour and dinner at 5:30. The guest speaker will be Robert J. Stanley, Ph.D., Professor of Chemistry at Temple University, and the title of the evening's talk will be "Extremophilic DNA Repair – Some like it hot, and others not." Get details.

  3. 8 November 2017- [Lycoming College] : The meeting will feature a presentation by our invited speaker and will be preceded by a dinner at 5:00. The guest speaker will be Rebecca Switzer, Ph.D., of Bucknell University and the title of the evening's talk will be "Biochemical Consequences of Disease-Causing Mutations in the RFTS Domain of DNA Methyltransferase 1."     7 February 2018 - [King's College] CANCELLED DUE TO PREDICTED SNOW : The meeting will feature a presentation by our invited speaker and will be preceded by a dinner. The guest speaker will be Sergei Sheiko, Ph.D., George A. Bush, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the title of the evening's talk will be "Programmable Design of Tissue-Mimetic Materials."   4. 21 March 2018 - [Susquehanna University]: The meeting will be on the THIRD Wednesday of March and feature a presentation by our invited speaker and will be preceded by a dinner. The guest speaker will be Jeremy Ramsey, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Lycoming College and the title of the evening's talk will be "Using Analytical Chemistry to Support Rural Coffee Farmers in Dominican Republic."   5. 11 April 2018 - [Marywood University] : The meeting will feature a presentation by our invited speaker and will be preceded by dinner. The guest speaker will be Deanne Dulik Garver, Ph.D., Associate Professor at Marywood University and the title of the evening's talk will be "Organic Chemistry Down on the Farm." Get details.

  6. 2 May 2018 - [Annual Awards Banquet at the Pine Barn Inn in Danville]: With the presentation of various local section awards, the Annual Awards Banquet recognizes both aspiring and accomplished chemistry professionals in the area who have helped to promote chemistry, the chemical professions, and the section. The ceremony will begin at 5:30 PM and the guest speaker will be Dr. Brian Smith of the Department of Chemistry at Bucknell University who will present a talk titled "Water, Water Everywhere?
