An Up Close and Personal Look at Undergraduate Research: The Thrill of Victory, The Agony of Defeat
Dr. Reingold will trace his career by means of a series of anecdotes, describing how he got where he is today and some of the lessons learned along the way.
Professor I. David Reingold came to Juniata in 1988 with a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon, an A.B. from Dartmouth College, additional research experience at the University of Alberta, Canada, and the University of Chicago, and more than ten years of college teaching experience. He was awarded Juniata's Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1992. He has also received the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Scholar/Fellow Award (1995-7) Dr. Reingold is a member of the American Chemical Society. He served as secretary of the Green Mountain Section (1985-86) and on the Executive Committee for the Central Pennsylvania Section. He is a proposal reviewer for the National Science Foundation and the Petroleum Research Fund and article reviewer for the Journal of Organic Chemistry. He has been a councilor on the Council on Undergraduate Research for several years, has served as chair of the chemistry division for two years, was chair of the finance committee for three years, and was CUR's Volunteer of the Year for 2001. Dr. Reingold has received nearly half a million dollars from private and federal funding agencies to support his research. Sources include the National Science Foundation, the Petroleum Research Fund, the Research Corporation, American Cyanamid Corporation, and the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation. He has supported more than 60 undergraduate students in his labs, many of whom have been coauthors on his papers. His webpage is: http://faculty.juniata.edu/reingold/
Dr. Reingold's research is focused on organic synthesis. He tries to make molecules that have never been made before, and that are predicted to possess interesting properties. His current target is methylenesemibullvalene. Dr. Reingold is also interested in creating some large aromatic systems composed of benzene rings formed into loops of various sorts.
