An Introduction to Drug Metabolism
Understanding the absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of drug candidates is an integral component in the development of prescription drugs for use in human and animal health. Numerous analytical tools play key roles in ascertaining the metabolic fate of these compounds. Drug-drug interactions between concurrently prescribed medications, and the possible impact of OTC drugs and other commonly consumed materials upon metabolic transformations of prescription drugs, may have clinical implications.

Bill VandenHeuvel received his A.B., A.M. and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton University. Following his graduate studies, he served in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service at the N.I.H., and then on the faculty of Baylor University College of Medicine, Houston. In 1964 he joined Merck Sharp & Dohme Research Laboratories (now Merck Research Laboratories) at Rahway, NJ, where he worked in a variety of areas, including drug metabolism. Bill is currently a Faculty Associate in Chemistry at Bucknell University, and chairs the S.V.S. of the A.C.S.
