Sulfonylurea Herbicides: A Retrospective

First commercialized in 1981, the family of sulfonylurea herbicides has spawned more than 20 different active molecules for weed control in virtually every major crop worldwide. This new generation of highly active herbicides was not without its challenges. These were mainly in the area of safety to sensitive rotational crops and analysis of the actives in environmental samples at biologically relevant levels. Research that enabled these obstacles to be met successfully will be described, along with selected quantitative aspects of the environmental behavior of the sulfonylurea herbicides commercialized by DuPont.

Dr. Duffy received a BS in Chemistry from State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1964. He earned graduate degrees in Physical Chemistry from Adelphi University in 1978 and 1981. Dr. Duffy was a research fellow with DuPont when he retired in 2001 after 33 years in the pharmaceutical and agricultural products divisions. The last 20 years of his career was spent in research focused on understanding the environmental fate of sulfonylurea herbicides and discovering new actives with environmentally friendly properties. He has been a member of the faculty at College Misericordia since 2001.
