Prostate Cancer Prevention by Bioactive Polyphenols from Berry Fruits

An overwhelming body of data has established that phytochemicals have a positive impact on several chronic human diseases, including cancer. Prostate Cancer (CaP) is the second leading form of cancer among men in the United States, typically affecting 1 in 6 men over the age of 50 years. However, early diagnosis and the slow-growing nature of CaP, make it an ideal disease for nutritional intervention with dietary phytochemicals, with the goal of delaying and/or preventing CaP recurrence. Several plant-derived foods have been shown to have great potential for CaP prevention. These include green and black tea, the Indian curry spice (curcumin), resveratrol (present in red wine), lycopene (found in tomatoes), soy isoflavones, and very recently, berry fruits. Among berry fruits, strawberries, red and black raspberries, muscadine grapes, and pomegranates, are common in that they contain bioactive polyphenols known as anthocyanins (pigment which impart their colors) and ellagitannins. These polyphenols are potent antioxidants and affect the PI3K/AKT-NF∞ÛB-COX-2 pro-inflammatory signaling pathway which has been implicated in CaP occurrence. Recent in vitro, animal, and human (both phase-I and phase-II clinical) CaP studies, conducted by our group with pomegranate, will be presented. Gaps in knowledge and future opportunities for cancer prevention, using plant-derived foods and extracts, will also be discussed.

Navindra P. Seeram, obtained his Ph.D degree in Natural Products Chemistry from the University of West Indies, Jamaica, and conducted his postdoctoral research at Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI. He then joined the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), as Assistant Director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition in the School of Medicine. He has recently joined the College of Pharmacy at URI as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacognosy and directs the Bioactive Botanical Research Lab. His research interests are focused on the phytochemical and biological evaluation of terrestrial plants and berry fruits, for the prevention and treatment of chronic human illnesses such as cancer, inflammation and diabetes.
