13 September 2008 - THE SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY LOCAL SECTION'S 50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION: The Anniversary Celebration will be in the afternoon of Saturday, September 13th, 2008 at the Joseph Priestley House in Northumberland, PA. A program about the Susquehanna Valley Section history and its relationship with the Joseph Priestley House is planned. Snack food and beverages will be served under a tent in the yard of the Priestley House. Following the events at the JPH, a dinner will be held at the Townside Garden Cafe. 6 May 2009 - [Annual Awards Banquet at Bloomsburg University] With the presentation of various local section awards, the Annual Awards Banquet recognizes both aspiring and accomplished chemistry professionals in the area who have helped to promote chemistry, the chemical professions, and the section. The speaker, Dr. Daniel King of Drexel University, will present a talk entitled "Engaging Students in the Classroom: Is Technology the Answer?" Get details and the banquet's program.

Science Café #1
A science café is a forum where the general public can discuss a scientific topic with a scientist knowledgeable about that topic, typically in a pub-type atmosphere. The Susquehanna Valley Section of the American Chemical Society is attempting to begin a science caf¨˛ in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area. The first event will be held on Thursday, October 16th at Old Tyme Charlie's Pub, 31 S. River St. Plains, PA . The speaker for the evening will be David Sloan Wilson of Binghamton University. He is the author of the book Evolution for Everyone: How Darwin's Theory Can Change the Way We Think About Our Lives. An open discussion of the topic of evolution will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the pub following Dr. Wilson's opening remarks.
Science Café #2
A science café is a forum where the general public can discuss a scientific topic with a scientist knowledgeable about that topic, typically in a pub-type atmosphere. The Susquehanna Valley Section of the American Chemical Society is continuing to host science cafés in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area. The second event will be held on Thursday, April 23rd at Old Tyme Charlie's Pub, 31 South River Street, in Plains, PA. The speaker for the evening will be Joe Scopelliti of PPL. He is the PPL Susquehanna Nuclear Power Plant Community Relations Manager. An open discussion of the topic of nuclear power will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the pub following Mr. Scopelliti's opening remarks.

The Local Section Annual NMR Symposium at the 236th ACS National Meeting & Expo August 17-21, 2008 in Philadelphia, PA
The Local Section warmly invites students and faculty to a half-day symposium entitled "Innovation in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in the undergraduate curriculum" on the morning of Monday, 18 August 2008. It would be difficult to overstate the significance of the role played by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in advancing chemical knowledge to its present state. Chemists recognize the immense power of NMR spectroscopy as a tool for probing gases, liquids, and solids. As this important spectroscopic tool continues to evolve and gain power it is critical for the undergraduate curriculum to incorporate modern methods and applications of NMR. This session highlights recent curricular developments in the use of NMR to study structure, bonding, chemical environment, and dynamic processes (such as chemical kinetics or molecular motion) - especially in areas related to the areas of human health, pharmaceutical sciences, and materials science.
